What is Winston AI?

Winston AI homepage.

Winston AI is an artificial intelligence detection platform that helps identify content created by AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and other large language models. It analyzes text and provides a probability score indicating whether the content was likely human-written or AI-generated.

The company behind Winston AI is Winston AI Inc., a tech startup founded in 2022 and headquartered in Montreal, Canada. The company focuses on AI text detection solutions and was co-founded by Thierry Lavergne.

What makes Winston stand out is its accuracy. I’ve tried several detection tools, many of which gave me more problems than solutions. Winston uses advanced machine learning algorithms that are constantly being updated to keep pace with evolving AI writing technology.

The core purpose of Winston AI is pretty straightforward. It helps maintain content authenticity, where AI-generated text is becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish from human writing. It’s particularly useful for three main things: checking student assignments, verifying original content for blogs, and ensuring that content being read hasn’t been mass-produced by AI.

Target Audience & Industries

As for who uses it the most, teachers and academic institutions are major users. Everyone is trying to maintain academic integrity while acknowledging that AI tools aren’t going away anytime soon.

Content publishers and marketing agencies also rely heavily on Winston AI to ensure their material meets originality standards. Winston AI helps these organizations verify content authenticity and enforce policies around human-written content.

SEO specialists use it too. Google has been clear about its stance on AI-generated content without proper oversight, and nobody wants to risk their search rankings over this issue! HR departments are also using Winston to check job applications and writing samples.

It uses linguistic analysis and pattern recognition to assign a detection score and highlight AI-generated sentences in a color-coded map for easy review.
  • Integrated Plagiarism Checker: Alongside AI detection, Winston AI scans over 400 billion web pages and documents to identify plagiarism. When plagiarism is detected, Winston AI highlights the matched text in red within the document and provides links to the original sources, making it easy to identify and address copied content.

How to Use Winston AI

YouTube Video

Here’s how I used Winston AI to detect whether or not the text was written with AI or by a human:

  1. Create a Winston AI Account
  2. Explore the Dashboard
  3. Start a Content Scan
  4. Add a Title & Author
  5. Add & Scan Text
  6. Receive Human & Readability Scores
  7. View Documents

Step 1: Create a Winston AI Account

Getting started for free with Winston AI.

I started by going to gowinston.ai and hitting the “Get started free” button in the top right corner. Winston AI offers a 14-day, 2000-word scan trial for signing up (no credit card required).

Step 2: Explore the Dashboard

The Winston AI dashboard.

Once my account was created (it took no time), I was taken to my dashboard. Everything was laid out very simply, with the content scan and AI image scan front and center.

There was also an option to get a HUMN-1 certification. By connecting it to my website, it shows anyone who sees my content that it’s written by a human as opposed to AI. This can help Google view your content more favorably, boost your rankings in the SERPs, and encourage people to keep reading.

Below these features and the certification were my integrations. Winston AI makes it easy to connect with platforms like WordPress and Google Chrome to streamline scanning and verifying content across different tools.

Step 3: Start a Content Scan

Starting a content scan with Winston AI.

I decided to select “Start content scan” to see how Winston AI would do flagging AI-generated content.

Step 4: Add a Title & Author

Adding a document title and author to a new text scan with Winston AI.

Above the text box, I gave my document a title and an author. I named it “What is Winston AI?” and put down my name as the author.

Step 5: Add & Scan Text

Pasting AI-generated content into the empty field and hitting "Scan" to detect if it is written by AI or not.

Below that, I generated some human-sounding content with Claude 3.7 Sonnet describing what Winston AI was and pasted it in the empty field. I wanted to see if Winston would still be able to detect that the text had been generated with AI if it sounded more humanlike. Alternatively, you can upload a file or import from a URL.

Note that for Winston AI’s content scan to work correctly, the text needs to be at least 500 characters (this can be checked on the bottom left).

I made sure the “AI” toggle was turned on and hit “Scan text.”

Step 6: Receive Human & Readability Scores

Receiving a 0% human score from the Winston AI content detector.

A few seconds later, Winston AI gave me three scores:

  • Human Score (0%)
  • Plagiarism (available on paid plans)
  • Readability Score (36/100)

Below the scores was also an AI prediction map (what parts of the text are more or less written by AI), a report (available on paid plans), and the sections driving the AI score.

Overall, Winston AI did a perfect job at detecting the AI!

Receiving a 98% human score from the Winston AI content detector.

Next, I wanted to put Winston AI to the real test and give it text that was completely human-written by me. After doing so, it accurately detected it as human-written with a 98% human score and a 60/100 readability score!

Step 7: View Documents

Viewing documents on Winston AI.

To view and access my documents, I selected “Documents” from the left navigation panel.

Overall, Winston AI made the entire process smooth, from sign-up to scanning content. It impressed me with how accurately it flagged AI-generated text and confirmed human-written work!

The first Winston AI alternative I’d recommend is Copyleaks. Copyleaks offers an integrated suite for AI content detection, plagiarism checking, and even writing assistance.

Both platforms provide cloud-based AI detection and plagiarism checking, with user-friendly dashboards and flexible pricing plans. They are popular among educators, publishers, and businesses aiming to ensure content originality and integrity.

However, Copyleaks stands out with its robust API integrations and the ability to detect AI-written source code for developers and technical teams. Copyleaks also supports over 30 languages and provides detailed AI Insights to understand why content was flagged as AI-generated. Its enterprise-level features (such as turnkey LMS integrations and customer permissions) make it especially attractive for large organizations and institutions.

The next Winston AI alternative I’d recommend is Originality. It offers a robust suite of tools for detecting AI-generated content, plagiarism, and more. It’s an excellent tool for ensuring content authenticity and originality.

Both Winston AI and Originality are leading platforms in the AI content detection space with features like AI detection, plagiarism checking, and detailed reporting. They help publishers, educators, and content creators maintain high standards of originality and avoid search engine penalties.

However, Originality.ai is often recognized for its strong detection accuracy. In some independent tests, Originality.ai identified AI-generated content in most cases, outperforming Winston AI by a noticeable margin. For example, in one test, Originality.ai detected AI in six out of seven samples, while Winston AI detected fewer. This suggests that Originality.ai may be a more reliable choice for high confidence in AI detection, but performance can vary depending on the specific test and content type.

Originality also offers broader language support and more comprehensive reports, including scan history and team management. It integrates seamlessly with platforms like Google Docs and WordPress, and provides API access for workflow automation. Its flexible pay-as-you-go pricing and subscription plans make it accessible for both individuals and large teams.

Meanwhile, Winston AI is praised for its user-friendly interface and ease of use, especially for beginners. It supports document uploads in multiple formats, offers OCR for scanned documents, and provides quick, visually clear results. However, it has more limited integrations and language support compared to Originality.

For the highest detection accuracy, advanced reporting, and workflow integrations, choose Originality. For a user-friendly experience with convenient document handling and fast results, Winston AI remains an excellent option.

However, Winston AI stands out with its industry-leading detection accuracy (reportedly up to 99.98% for models like ChatGPT and GPT-4) and its ability to handle large documents. It’s especially popular among educational institutions and publishers for its comprehensive plagiarism detection, user-friendly interface, and color-coded reporting. Its high reliability makes it a top choice for rigorous content verification.

Meanwhile, AI Detector Pro distinguishes itself with its real-time detection, bulk scanning (up to 50,000 characters per scan), and paraphrasing tools that suggest edits to make AI-flagged content sound more human. It offers branded and white-label reports, affordable pricing, and supports multiple languages.
